Course lists are easy to compare. The learning experience is harder and more important. Before choosing a coding or AI class, look beyond the number of topics and ask how the teacher responds to your child, how projects are used and how you will know that real understanding is developing.
1. Observe the teaching, not just the syllabus
A long curriculum can look impressive while telling you little about the class itself. During a trial, notice whether the teacher asks what your child already knows, gives them time to think and changes the explanation when they are unsure.
- Does the child do most of the thinking and building?
- Are questions welcomed and answered clearly?
- Does the mentor check understanding before moving on?
2. Ask what personalisation changes
One-to-one attention creates the opportunity to personalise, but it is the mentor's choices that make it real. Ask how a learning path changes when a student moves quickly, needs to revisit a concept or develops a new interest.
3. Look for meaningful projects
A project should be more than a template with a different colour. Learners need chances to make decisions, encounter problems and improve the result. Ask to see the kinds of projects students build at a similar level and what concepts each project develops.
4. Decide how progress will be visible
Completion is not the same as understanding. Useful progress updates connect skills to evidence: what the learner built, which ideas they can now use independently and what the mentor recommends next.
