Generative AI can help a child brainstorm, create and prototype, but a polished output can hide weak reasoning or invented facts. The goal is not simply to restrict the tool or celebrate it. It is to help young people use it with intention, verify what matters and keep their own judgement in the loop.
A simple framework: direct, check, improve
First, direct the tool with a specific goal and useful context. Next, check facts, assumptions and whether the output actually answers the task. Finally, improve it through the child's own choices by rewriting, testing, combining ideas or rejecting what does not fit.
- Direct: What are you trying to make, for whom and within what limits?
- Check: Which claims, code or sources need verification?
- Improve: What will you change based on your own reasoning?
Where generative AI fits in a project
AI can be useful during brainstorming, explanation and prototyping. It becomes less useful when it replaces the exact thinking a learner needs to practise. If the learning goal is to understand a Python loop, copying a generated solution misses the point; asking for three examples and then writing a fresh one may support it.
Set boundaries before the tool opens
Agree on what information stays private, when adult guidance is needed and how AI assistance should be acknowledged. Clear expectations are easier to follow than rules introduced after a problem appears.
- Never enter passwords, addresses or private documents
- Use age-appropriate tools and account settings
- Check school rules before using AI in assignments
- Discuss surprising, upsetting or unsafe results with an adult
The five-minute family agreement
- We decide the purpose before using AI
- We keep personal information private
- We verify facts and test generated code
- We are honest about when and how AI helped
- We stop and ask an adult when something feels wrong
